HOWEVER, it is important to note that we just can not afford to run these programs without your "tuition" or "pay to play" fees! Many of you have signed up but have not yet paid. Please be sure to pay for your program ASAP by either pay online using the Shopping Cart feature of our website here, or by bringing a check to the office. Checks for after school programs should be made out to "Friends of REALMS"
We have a limited number of scholarships available to families who qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Thanks for helping our after school programs a success for kids!
Why read the newsletter anyway?
Hi REALMS Families,
We hope that your kiddos have had a great start to the school year - we sure have enjoyed having them back in the building. It definitely brings the school to life after a summer of quiet hallways!
So, why bother reading the newsletter? Here are a few reasons I can think of:
REALMS is a dynamic school - the newsletter includes important information and need-to-know details about upcoming events!
Check out fun pictures of and highlights about YOUR kids!
Start great dinner conversations at home with your kiddo after reading about what our he/she is doing and learning!
Discover how you can be involved at REALMS as a parent!
We only send a newsletter out each month (occasionally more)!
And last but not least... just like our staff and students: You too are CREW, NOT PASSENGERS!
Hope you enjoy,
PS - Don't forget that our live calendar is a great place to look for upcoming events, trips etc!
The Redails are "off and running"! Scott White and his crew are geeting ready for their first meet this Thursday (9/24).
The meet is at Pilot Butte Middle School (think hills!) and begins at 3:50pm. Students will be bussed from REALMS to the meet but must be picked up by parents at PBMS after the meet. Come cheer on the team! Projected end time is close to 6:00pm, but please arrive early for pick up.
The Redtails XC team prepares for their 1st Time Trial at Sawyer Park.
Redtails Cross Country Update - 1st meet this week!
Walk & Bike To School Days! Want to Ride Together?!
Wednesday Septeber 30th and Wednesday October 7th
Each Fall and Spring at REALMS we celebrate Commute Options by holding a couple of Walk & Bike to School Days with two organized riding groups! For students who have never ridden to school before, or never ridden to REALMS before, this is an excellent way to introduce them and help them get comfortable with riding in the hopes that they will build a habit over time. If you are a seasoned rider, then join us for the company and fun of riding with friends. Of course, kids are WELCOME to ride on their own as well!
Our westside riding group will meet at the 1st Street Rapids parking lot at approximately 7:15am and will depart together at 7:30am sharp. We will have two staff members to ride with kids - parents welcome.
Our eastside riding group will meet at the WEST DOORS of Juniper Swim & Fitness at by 7:00am and will depart together at 7:15am sharp. We will have two staff members to ride with kids - parents welcome.
Parents - please make sure that your kiddo's bike is in good working order (tires pumped, brakes functioning, seat height adjusted) and please make sure they are wearing a properly fitted helmet.
Parents - want to ride with us?
We sure could use some helpers to ride along and help kids learn safe riding proactices, especially if our groups get big! Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you want to ride and be sure to let him know which dates and which location... east side or west side. Thanks!
Revised BLSD and CET Bus Schedules!!
It has been awesome to see so many kids using the CET and Bend LaPine busses. Yahoo!
Coincidentally, both systems have just this week made some tweaks to their route schedules and if your student rides the bus you should be aware of these changes. We will post these schedules in the hallway for kids to see, and they are shared with you below for your convenience.
Important Updates From Our Leah in our Kitchen!
Reduced = Free?!
Did you know that families who qualify for "reduced price" lunch actually now receive their meals for FREE?! Thanks to the Oregon Department of Education for making meals at school more affordable for families than ever! Wow.
Free & Reduced Application Required ANNUALLY - Have You Completed Yours This Year?
Be sure to do so becasue your student will not qualify for free meals after the month of September unless you have completed the application! CLICK HERE for paper and web versions.
Don't Qualify for Free or Reduced And Want to Pay?
Want to pay for breakfast and lunch.... until further notice all school lunches at REALMS must be paid for by cash or check, as the online BLPay system is not yet up and running for us. Simply deposit money into your student's account with a check (please make it out to Bend LaPine Schools or Nutrition Services) and drop the check off with Leah or in our office.
Some pictures of kids in action here at school!
A message from Erin, our FAN Advocate!
Your REALMS FAN Advocate connects children and families to basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, medical, dental and vision services. Right now, we have a limited number of spots for a school clothing program. Contact Erin at 541-355-4316 if you are needing clothing or school supplies for your child.
Smarter Balanced Test Scores From 2014-15 - REALMS students represent!
Some of you may have seen or heard in the news that the Smarter Balanced test scores from last year were just released statewide. We are pleased to see that REALMS students did very well on these new asessments which emphasize critical thinking, evidenced-based writing and math problem solving much more than the old OAKS assessments. The new Smarter Balanced assessments are also aligned to the Common Core State Standards which form the backbone of much of our curriculum here at REALMS.
Individual test score reports will be sent home in the next two weeks, and in the meantime here is a summary of some of our results:
Medications at school - an important update from Jennifer
If your student takes any over the counter OR presecription medication (this includes ibuprofen, allergy med etc.) we MUST have the Authorization For Medication Form complete before we are allowed to give your student anything AND we must have the medication delivered to our office in the original bottle. Without the complete form and the medication in the bottle we will not be able to give your kiddo anything! You can download and print the form or stop by our office for one.
No School at REALMS Friday October 16th.... Expeditionary Learning PD
Mark your calendars - this is NOT a day off for other schools in the District! Part of our work with Expeditionary Learning Schools is engaging in meaningful teacher learning work and this is a day of rich teacher learning that helps our school remain on the cutting edge! Thanks for understanding.
