Being Up To Speed Means... checking Parentvue.
Dear REALMS Families,
As we enter October it is clear we are now up to fulll speed here at school! Students are settling in and getting to know one another... building friendships and forming allies. Crews are bonding, helping kids build relationships across grades. After school programs are rolling along and kids are having some great experiences outside of school building new skills and relationships. And last but not least, our classes are in full swing, meaning that homework is the likely next issue to pop up onto your radar screen, if it hasn't already!
We strongly recommend that you begin checking ParentVue weekly now, if you have not already. Do it together with your student so they can show you how to view scores on standards and how to check for missing assignments. If there is ever any confusion about a missing assignment we strongly recommend you email the teacher!!
If you are unsure of how to use ParentVue, or want to learn more about our Proficiency Based Assessment System, please consider watchng the video below. The first 6 minutes of this video are about how we use Proficiency Based Assessment. At the 6:30 mark of the video I show some tips for how to get the most out of ParentVue! Also - this CanaryFlow vs. ParentVue document clarifies the difference between the two programs, and what you need to know as a parent about each.
THE MONSTER DASH!
As many of you know, Coach Scott is the owner of Fleet Feet Sports who is hosting a fun run for a great cause on Saturday October 31st. It's called The Monster Dash, and Scott is encouraging as many kids to sign up as possible. The Monster dash is a non-profit event that proudly sponsors Younity, an organization that brings bully-prevention programs and workshops to Central Oregon Schools. Our goal is to get 400 participants, to include as many grade school and high school kids as we can to come out and run or walk for this cause. All the info and sign ups are right HERE.
Have xc questions? Contact Coach Scott at email@example.com

Important Updates From Our Leah in our Kitchen!
Reduced = Free?!
Did you know that families who qualify for "reduced price" lunch actually now receive their meals for FREE?! Thanks to the Oregon Department of Education for making meals at school more affordable for families than ever! Wow.
Free & Reduced Application Required ANNUALLY - Have You Completed Yours This Year?
Be sure to do so becasue your student will not qualify for free meals after the month of September unless you have completed the application! CLICK HERE for paper and web versions.
Don't Qualify for Free or Reduced And Want to Pay?
Want to pay for breakfast and lunch.... until further notice all school lunches at REALMS must be paid for by cash or check, as the online BLPay system is not yet up and running for us. Simply deposit money into your student's account with a check (please make it out to Bend LaPine Schools or Nutrition Services) and drop the check off with Leah or in our office.

A message from Erin, our FAN Advocate!
Your REALMS FAN Advocate connects children and families to basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, medical, dental and vision services. Right now, we have a limited number of spots for a school clothing program. Contact Erin at 541-355-4316 if you are needing clothing or school supplies for your child.
Internet Safety Workshop For Parents Here at REALMS (October 22nd)
The Internet can be a wonderful resource for children's learning and development. Kids who are old enough to punch a few letters on a keyboard can literally access the world! Middle school students are faced with PLENTY of choices, risks, and sometimes a lot of freedom with their phones and other internet devices.
However, technology and the Internet also play a direct role in the sexualization and potential abuse of children. Protecting children against these dangers can seem like an overwhelming task. While there is no easy solution to keep kids safe in the virtual world, the good news is that you can take some easy steps to better protect them and that's where we can help.
Join us for a customized Internet Safety Workshop presented by The Kids Center here at REALMS on
Thursday October 22nd from 6:00pm - 8:00pm.
Due to the nature of some of the workshop content it is most appropriate for parents only.
If your kiddo has (or is going to have) a phone or other internet capable device of their own,
or spends time online at home or with friends, then we strongly encourage you to attend this training!
Medications at school - an important update from Jennifer
If your student takes any over the counter OR presecription medication (this includes ibuprofen, allergy med etc.) we MUST have the Authorization For Medication Form complete before we are allowed to give your student anything AND we must have the medication delivered to our office in the original bottle. Without the complete form and the medication in the bottle we will not be able to give your kiddo anything! You can download and print the form or stop by our office for one.
Student Led Conferences Are Coming Soon - Read Up and Sign Up!
Our Fall Student Led Conferences (SLC's) are coming up on Thursday and Friday November 12th and 13th.
Student Led Conferences at REALMS are a critical component of staying "up to speed" with your student's academic progress. AT SLC's it is STUDENTS who do most of the talking. In the two weeks prior to the conferences students go through a process of selecting pieces of work (evidence) that deomstrate their learning and growth on core learning targets (standards) in each class. They reflect on their learning in each class and on their next steps, and prepare to share all this with you in a structured 45 minute academic conversation! It is pretty awesome. We typically have 100% (or VERY close) family participation - go REALMS Redtails!
Get signed up for an SLC slot right away using the links below.
We have slots ALL day on Thursday November 12th and in the morning of Friday November 13th
Sign up early to get your choice!
Slots are 45 minutes long and becasue the schedule is tight, we must stay true to time limits, so arrive early
If you have two kiddos at REALMS, be sure that you sign up for 2 slots that DO NOT OVERLAP (check ending times becasue some slots do overlap)
For blended families - if possible we request (on behalf of the kiddos) that parents from different households attempt to conference together in one slot so that your student leads one conference for all interested parents instead of a separate conference for each parent. If that is not feasible, and it is preferable for the student to lead two conferences, then please sign up for two... we get it.
If you can't make any of the available times, uh oh. Please email Roger for possible work aroounds.
Please use the correct, grade-based sign up tool for each student in your family, below:
We can't wait to help you and your student dive into some rich, productive, and "evidence-based" conversations about his/her growth and progress so far this year!
No School at REALMS Friday October 16th.... Expeditionary Learning PD
Mark your calendars - this is NOT a day off for other schools in the District! Part of our work with Expeditionary Learning Schools is engaging in meaningful teacher learning work and this is a day of rich teacher learning that helps our school remain on the cutting edge! Thanks for understanding.
Lost and Found
Lost and found is stacking up, and we have very little room to store it. This year, we will be removing lost and found on the last Friday of each month! There is a reminder about this event placed on our calendar, and we'll try to remember to give you a heads up... but please know that it is the responsibility of the student/parent to check and clear the lost and found frequently!
Our Wreath & Tree Sale Kicks off On Friday October 23rd
With the support of our non-profit foundation Friends of REALMS we are excited to kick off our
2015 Holiday Wreath and Tree Sale!
REALMS students pre-sell wreaths and swags that are made from sustainably harvested Noble Fir boughs from the Willamette National Forest near Molalla, Oregon. We also offer 5 gallon potted “Baby Blue” Spruce trees (a variety of the Colorado Blue Spruce), providing decor both indoors and out, that can be planted outdoors in the spring.
Surprise your neighbor, adorn your door, “spruce” up your house and support REALMS.
OUR GOAL IS TO RAISE $ 9,000
One year of fieldwork at REALMS costs well over $45,000.
It takes the fieldwork contribution fee and multiple other layers of fundraising to ensure that our students have these rich and powerful experiences.
Pictures of products and prices coming soon!
How can you help your student?
Have your student go to the homes of family members, family friends and neighbors you know.
We will meet our goal if each student sells just 8 items each. We hope everyone sells more and we blow our target goal out of the water !!
Help your student by suggesting potential “customers” that they can visit, telephone, email or Facebook!
Help ensure that your student accurately records customer information on the order form, and that their money collected matches the recording sheet.
There will be 4 “turn in” days in November (dates TBA) for students to turn in completed forms and money. A special treat will be served on the mornings of "turn in days" for students that bring in his/her completed order form and money.
Parents can help by selling to their colleagues at their place of employment. Please feel free to pick up a color flyer and additional ordering forms in the REALMS office .
What Are We Studying at REALMS? 1st Semester Curriculum Outlines
One of the things that makes REALMS special is that our curriculum is designed by REALMS teachers, not by some text book publisher in a far off place. REALMS teachers have extensive expoerience in designing rigorous, standards-based curriculum units (we call them usually call them learning expeditions or case studies) that are engaging to students, often inter-disciplinary and quite frequently are connected to themes of environmental stewardship, social justice, or self expression.
To see the curriculum outlines that teachers have put together, click the links to the Google Docs below. These curriculum outlines are "living, breathing documents" and are subject to change. In fact, there are a few sections that are still blank... check back in a week or so to see more!
